~ Cuphead talking to Boyfriend in FNF: Indie Cross |
Cuphead is the main protagonist of his titular game, and the first main opponent you face in the Friday Night Funkin' mod. he's also a major protagonist in MORØ's various animations including his most iconic series "Indie Cross."
He is voiced by William Alexander Ryan (DAGames) in the mod and episode 1 of the animated web series of the same name, before being replaced by Michael Kovach starting from episode 2 onwards.
Appearance[]
Cuphead is a humanoid boy with a cup for a head. He has two large eyes with big, black pupils, a small, red nose and a long, cheerful smile. the inside of his head has a white liquid (apparently his life-force) and red-and-white bendy straw. While it may seem that his body is black, it's actually white, as seen with his legs. He's wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, two white gloves, red shorts, and brown boots; all with rather goofy proportions.
Personality[]
Cuphead is reckless, confident, irresponsible, and cockier willing that he always enjoys misadventures with Mugman. After losing in Technicolor Tussle, He is then shown to be violent, short-tempered, and relentless where he tried to kill Boyfriend with his attacking powers, when he accidentally knocked out Mugman with a EX Move. Or when he fights Shovel Knight after he was called a "Magic Flask" by him.
Biography[]
Friday Night Funkin': Indie Cross[]
Cuphead is first seen in the first cutscene of his week searching for the red portals, only to come across Boyfriend and challenges him.
After being bested in Snake Eyes, Cuphead decides to use his peashooter saying it's time to "double down." But Mugman intervenes asking if he needs help. Cuphead declines but tells him to go find Ms. Chalice. But before Mugman leaves, he tells Cuphead to quit using violence and leaves. Cuphead however, still decides to double down.
Boyfriend then hits him with his microphone after he beats him in Technicolor Tussle. Before Cuphead could respond, a lightning bolt struck nearby, startling him. As rain began to fall, Cuphead questioned what Mugman said to him. However, he interpreted it as Mugman saying that he could go wild if it was Boyfriend. Cuphead then tells Boyfriend that's he's gonna go full triple down on him.
During Knockout, Cuphead accidentally shoots Mugman with an EX Move that Boyfriend dodged. This sends Cuphead into blind fury. Once the song ends, he fires a Charge right behind him and then tries to shoot one at Boyfriend before he unleashes his super move on him. Boyfriend runs from the attack and tries to throw his mic at Cuphead again, but he quickly cancels his super and grabs ahold of it, pulling Boyfriend towards him and successfully hits him with an EX Move.
Once Boyfriend is pinned at a tree, Cuphead then starts to charge up another shot as he attempts to finish him off. As he's about to deliver the final blow, the mysterious red portal takes Boyfriend away and leaves Cuphead confused over what just happened.
MORØ's various animations[]
Nightmare Cuphead Vs. The Devil[]
This takes place after what happened after the FNF mod. As the red portal that took Boyfriend away disappears, Cuphead takes a moment to realize what he had just done. He turns back to Mugman's body as his ghost starts to fly up. Cuphead then tries to hurry and parry Mugman's ghost but misses him. A crack in the sky suddenly appears and causes Cuphead to transform into Nightmare Cuphead.
Nightmare Cuphead then appears in the Devil's throne room. The Devil is shocked to see him, before complimenting his new look before asking if he was going to join him. But Nightmare Cuphead interrupts him mid-sentence by shooting at him and sending him into a pillar. The two engage into a battle, as The Devil tries to charge at Nightmare Cuphead, but the latter then kills him with an EX Move as the throne room ends up being lightened up in a neon pink.
Cuphead Vs. Tricky[]
Cuphead then appears in Nevada and starts causing havoc there. During the battle, he accidentally causes a hot dog Tricky had to disappear. The clown then tries to fight the Nightmare Cup. Only for Nightmare Cuphead to send him off down a cliff. However, due to being attacked, Nightmare Cuphead then turns back to Cuphead. He then looks around the area he was now in. But then Tricky appears as a gigantic flaming-red demon. Cuphead then smirks as he prepares to battle Tricky.
During the battle, Hank then appears and helps Cuphead fight Tricky. In which the two end up succeeding as Tricky is neutralized.
Nightmare Bendy Vs. Nightmare Sans[]
Nightmare Cuphead makes a small appearance as he appears out of the portal and notices Nightmare Bendy and Nightmare Sans both flying towards him. He then prepares to attack them, only for them to speed by and smack him while doing do. Nightmare Cuphead then spawns one of the portal and leaves.
The post credits of the video show the aftermath of "Cuphead Vs. Tricky," as Tricky then turns back to normal as Cuphead then holds out his hand to Hank for a high five, only for Hank to unintentionally break Cuphead's hand. Cuphead then screamed in pain while Hank thought about who's responsible for the red portals. After Cuphead stops screaming as a red portal catches his eyes. He looks at in with an unsure look. Hank then puts his hand on Cuphead's shoulder to give him some confidence. Cuphead then jumps into the portal as the video ends.
Cuphead Vs. Choo-Choo Charles[]
In this video. Cuphead then appears in Aranearum Island. Cuphead is confused at where he is before coming to the conclusion that he's farther away from Inkwell Isles. He then gets hit by the train that's used in the game. He quickly gets into the train and stops it. He then exits it and looks at it. Choo-Choo Charles then suddenly appeared behind him and tries to attack him, but Cuphead then quickly appeared to the back of the train and starts the fight against Charles.
During the battle, Charles then destroys the train and Cuphead then runs from him while still attacking Charles. Near the end of the video, Charles then turns into Hell Charles as the battle continues. Cuphead then accidentally leads Charles to an unfinished bridge as the latter then falls to his death. Cuphead then notices another red portal offscreen and goes through it.
Indie Cross Episode 1[]
Cuphead appears around when Shovel Knight is having trouble fighting one of the mysterious drones as he easily takes it down. Before Cuphead can finish it off however, more drones suddenly appear. Shovel Knight tells Cuphead to escape, but Cuphead thinks they can easily take out the whole army. Shovel Knight then grabs Cuphead and flees the scene. Cuphead tells Shovel Knight to let go of him because he still thinks can take care of the whole army. Shovel Knight refuses to do so. Cuphead then uses his Smoke Bomb effect to get out of his grasp. Only for him to teleport over a cliff and falls with Shovel Knight going after him.
As Cuphead and Shovel Knight fall to the bottom of the cliff, Cuphead angrily tells Shovel Knight that they could've taken down the army if he didn't stop them. Shovel Knight questions him on what logic is he even talking about. Cuphead says that he thinks that since there are two of them, they're being no possible way they could've lost.
As the two continue to argue, Cuphead then accuses Shovel Knight of wanting to kill him all for himself. Shovel Knight then goes on about how his armor is an oath to combat evil and how if he thought that Cuphead was evil, he would've killed him. This makes Cuphead believe that Shovel Knight thinks he has the higher ground. Shovel Knight tries to get Cuphead to see reason, but Cuphead is still on the thought process that Shovel Knight wants him dead. After more arguing, the two start name-calling each other as Shovel Knight refers to Cuphead as a "Magic Flask," which enraged Cuphead as he uses his peashooter against him.
The two start fighting each other, using powers and skills from their respective series. In the end, Shovel Knight bests Cuphead and tells him to stop fighting. Cuphead at first refuses but gives in and asks Shovel Knight to tell Elder Kettle and Mugman that he was the one who broke the picket fence. Shovel Knight is confused by this as Cuphead goes into a rant and tries to put the blame on Mugman for giving him a yo-yo.
Cuphead is then caught off guard when Shovel Knight throws a healing potion at him. Shovel Knight claims that he finds Cuphead's strength from his love for his brother and his guardian. The two then start bonding as Cuphead learns about how Shovel Knight and his compadres trained to protect their world and save others, only for him to get disturbed when Cuphead mentions how shovels were used to bury the deceased and the two continued their journey. Shovel Knight then says that Cuphead must be missing Elder Kettle and Mugman. But Cuphead bursts into laughter due to the former referring to his brother as "Mugsy." Shovel Knight gets annoyed with Cuphead while he is continuing to laugh.
Cuphead then appears at the end of the episode with Shovel Knight as he tried to use his Charge Shot against a mysterious yellow drone that was with Madeline and The Knight. But the Knight quickly blocks his attack as both Cuphead and Shovel Knight both look at each other in confusion before the episode ends.

Trivia[]
- Cuphead uses three different weapons (Peashooter, Chaser, and Roundabout) during Knockout, even though he could only equip two at once in the original game. He also uses the Charge shot in the final cutscene.
- In his old sprites he also used the Charge shot in "Knockout" instead of the Peashooter.
- In the original version of Technicolor Tussle, the song would slow down and stop before Cuphead begins attacking in order to explain the dodge and attack mechanics. This was removed in the final build.
- He was also meant to do a signature intro animation from Cuphead at the start of the song, which was also removed in the final build.
- Cuphead's microphone is unshaded in his idle and left pose.
- This is likely because these sprites are completely new, unlike his other poses which were just reanimated.
- The only ability from Cuphead's original game that he doesn't use in Indie Cross is one of his charms.
- However, he may be using Twin Heart's charm, considering he takes several hits from Boyfriend.
- When Nightmare Cuphead takes out the Devil. The background is the same one from the song Devil's Gambit in the FNF mod.
- When Cuphead argues to Shovel Knight that the two of them could've defeated the whole drone army. It's a reference to how Cuphead and Mugman would both fight bosses from their own game.
- Cuphead fighting a Tricky and Choo-Choo Charles isn't the first time he's fought a clown and a living train.
