Ermengarde and Alefrick are the secondary antagonists of the 2023 play The Reluctant Dragon. They are Jon's parents and constantly try to keep him home when he wants to go up on the downs.

Ermengarde is played by Karissma Thomas, and Alefrick is played by Caleb Foshee.

Biography[]

As soon as the play starts, Ulrick and Jon run back to Alefrick's hut to explain their sight in the woods. Ulrick tells Ermengarde that the dragon is mean and scary, while Jon thinks otherwise. Soon, Alefrick shows up and tells them that he saw a dragon, leading to Ulrick believing they should kill it. Ermengarde tells Alefrick to take Ulrick home, much to both of their dismay. Alefrick tells Ermengarde to watch Jon and makes sure he stays home. Ermengarde goes to find a mop and when she returns, Jon is gone.

They are later seen right after Ulrick and Jennifer agree to go to the inn. They talk about how Jon disappeared and what they should do. Ermengarde says they should go to the Inn, and Alefrick responses with 'That's a great idea, that I just had!'

They get to the Inn and discuss with Heinrick about Jon's disappearance and the encounter with the dragon. Alefrick agrees with Heinrick that the dragon should be killed but he's more worried about his son. Just then, Jon enters through the opposite side of the Inn, and his parents rush to him. They scold him for disappearing and tell him that he can no longer leave the house.

They aren't seen again until the finale where is it revealed to them (Known to the audience) That Jon is missing again. As they are looking, they get distracted by the fight between St. George and the Dragon. Once the dragon is "defeated", they cheer with the others until Jon comes running out of the cave. They run to him, with Jon ignoring their hugs and only tending to the dragon. It is revealed that Jon was helping the dragon and St George never meant to kill him. After they all apologize, the dragon laughs and they are all shocked now knowing he's alive. They all cheer and sing a little song.

Trivia[]

  • Half of the scenes with these two were completely made up.
  • Even though they are "antagonists," they can rarely count as "villains." They only get in the way of Jon trying to save the dragon.
