“ | Well ya' might as well know so you spread the word about racism, it's a galaxy wide issue. A filthy concept. Honestly, if I see discrimination of any kind, I shoot 'em. The universe may be vast, but there is no room or excuse for it. One discriminatory comment and yer' done. People see it as harsh, I see it as cleaning. | „ |
~ Ethyl Countrisyde. |
“ | Once I got to a city, I did my research on the Occasus Cult... I found out how much they hated non humans, and wanted to wipe 'em out. I remembered how nasty people treated me in school over my race. It then hit me like a tumbleweed from a sandstorm. I wouldn't of ended up in Desert's clutches had I not been so vulnerable. Discrimination is the source of countless problems... I decided that was how I was gonna make it up to mom. I was an outlaw now... I'd protect the peace in my own ways. Any discrimination? Shoot 'em. They don't deserve to stand around and ruin more lives. I don't want anyone else turnin' out like I did. | „ |
~ Ethyl on why he acts the way he does on discrimination. |
Ethyl Countrisyde is the main protagonist of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy, serving as the main protagonist of all three stories. He is a novakid outlaw who is dedicated to wiping out discrimination across the universe, shooting anyone who make any discriminatory comments. Despite being an outlaw, he is a good man, who cares about the wellbeing of others, and his crewmates. He became the captain of The Black Nebula, and later helped rebuild the Protectorate, being one of the leaders at the time, until the end of the third story, where he sacrificed himself to destroy the Backup Plan, saving the universe from destruction. He posthumously became a symbol of hope.

Personality[]
Ethyl at first seems like a cold person who keeps to himself and doesn't trust others. He takes his goals very seriously, not messing around and making sure to complete them in the most efficient ways. He is very intelligent, as he is able to manipulate or deceive his enemies and lure them to their deaths. He is also pretty manipulative, as he is good at conning people and knows how to hit people's weak spots. He is also very calm and collected, remaining sophisticated in even the toughest situations, and doesn't get angry much, and when he does, he doesn't let it get the best of him. However, as the story goes on, he learns to trust people more.
However, despite his cold outer shell, he is a good person, who only does what he thinks is right. Even when he was Desert's partner in crime, he stuck to a moral code, only ever killing in self defence, unlike Desert, who killed for fun. This resulted in Desert betraying him. Ever since then, he tasked himself to end discrimination after the Occasus Cult killed his mother for being a novakid. He has absolutely no tolerance of racism, homophobia or other types of discrimination, and will shoot anyone who is blatantly discriminatory, because he sees it as a filthy concept that only causes problems, and he's right.
He also has a compassionate side to him. When Katsu and Tori get caught up in his mess, he agrees to make it up to them by proving that they didn't hurt Mika, and keeps his end of the bargain. He does genuinely care about his crew after spending some time with them, even though he at first didn't really want a crew. He is willing to rescue innocents, and stop a big threat. He feels very remorseful over what happened to his mother, and feels guilty about becoming an outlaw, rather then a protector. Ethyl is shown to be willing to do anything for his crew, as he sees them as his friends.
Heroic Deeds[]
- He stood up against Desert after he started becoming worse, leading Desert to betray him.
- He dedicates himself to stopping discrimination, going around the universe and shooting anyone who he sees make a discriminatory comment. He is also willing to save innocents whenever possible, not letting them be harmed.
- He helped Robin and Lexie fight against some stargazers.
- He stood up to Mika when she was being nasty towards Katsu and Tori, and the only reason he didn't shoot Mika right there was because of her popularity and the place, and the fact he didn't want to cause a scene or outrage.
- When Katsu and Tori's publicity got ruined by Mika, he promised to clear their names, and he did. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- He helped fight against Tatasia when she was trying to kill an ex-miniknog member who felt remorse, and stopped her from getting out of control.
- He (albeit unwillingly at first) took Katsu, Tori, Robin, Lexie, Nightheart and Tatasia under his wing once it was revealed they had no ships to go back to.
- He tracked down Desert when he was located in the Solunar Nexus killing dozens of innocent people, fought against him when and apprehended him so he wouldn't kill anyone else. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- After he explained his past to his soon to be crew, he began to trust them, as they grew on him. He then officially called them his crew, and became their captain.
- When Katsu offered him, he joined the protectorate and stopped being an outlaw.
- When Tori was captured by Desert and Mika, he formulated a plan to save her and her village. In his role, he lured FEO agents away from the florans, and killing them off slowly, so Lexie and Nightheart could rescue the captive florans.
- He helped fight against the Floran Extermination Order, shooting quite a few agents and tried to kill Mika in her office so she couldn't fire.
- He destroyed the fourth fuel station for Mika's superweapon, saving the planet Solunar Nexus VI from being destroyed. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- He defeats Mika Aikawa, and kills her so she couldn't refuel her super weapon, effectively saving Solunar Nexus. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- After Mika was killed but activated a self destruct, he encouraged his crew to leave without him, so they wouldn't die looking for him, willing to die for his crew's safety. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- He fought against stargazer ships that were attacking a grounded village on Solunar Nexus IV.
- When Moonquill attacked his ship, he sabotaged her ship and used it to blackmail her into spending her attack.
- He made a promise to Azima that he would get her crew back from the Glitch Empire.
- He stopped a racist serial killer from hurting more people by killing them.
- He and Azima fought Ezalco in the temple while the rest of the crew searched for the staff.
- He and Azima beamed up the crew after Lexie urgently requested to, saving them from Xochtal.
- When Xochtal was torturing him, Robin and Lexie with hallucinations, he attacked the staff right before it seemed like Xochtal was going to kill them, which ended the illusion due to Xochtal’s attempt on their lives being legitimate.
- He substituted some of the stardust in the large container with gunpowder, then covered it up, tricking Xochtal into absorbing it without suspicion, and right as he did, he lit a match, which began destroying the staff once it was absorbed, then he shot the gem, blowing up the staff and killing Xochtal, ending his terror for good. (GOODNESS ZONE)
- He refused to join Stormlance, following the rest of his and Azima’s crew to do the same.
- During the escape from Stormlance’s castle, he retrieved everyone’s belongings.
- He, Nightheart, Kumiko and Ludvig fought against Kleriya and Ironwall while everyone else was looking for ships. He in particular tricked them by acting as if they were in the house behind them.
- He helped Azima and Ludvig with their plan to remake the protectorate.
- When the mayor refused to evacuate Solunar Nexus, he took action and made an announcement to the whole star system, pretending to be a terrorist with planet destroying bombs, in order to evacuate everyone to keep them safe from the upcoming invasion.
- He and Tetra defended Solunar Nexus II from Ironwall, who was killing innocent people.
- He along with several others went to rescue their captured teammates.
- He accepted a redeemed Moonquill onto his team, while making 100% sure she wasn’t tricking them.
- He, Nightheart, Tatasia and Moonquill snuck into a glitch planet and destroyed their connection to the glitch empire, and helped the civilians know the truth.
- He fought against Stormlance with Azima and Moonquill for quite some time, before the rest of the crew arrived.
- He eventually got into the backup plan after tricking Stormlance. After realising that the AI was going to destroy star systems if nobody controlled it, Ethyl decided to drive it into a star, sacrificing himself to save the universe from that omnicidal threat, and that so nobody could ever pilot it. (GOODNESS ZONE)
Quotes[]
The Black Nebula[]
“ | (Novakid: It's 2500 pixels to park yer' ship this close to the village! Also I need to know yer' name.) Whaddya' say to 7500 pixels... And we don't do no name? | „ |
~ Ethyl bribing a guard to hide his name. |
~ Ethyl to Robin and Lexie about discrimination, and his most famous quote. |
“ | No. The last time I trusted someone... It ended horribly for me. I can't simply trust someone I don't know well so easily. | „ |
~ Ethyl, at first denying any crewmates. |
“ | Alright, we know cities by now. No guns out in public, they scare good people. If there's a racist, kill 'em with our words. | „ |
~ Ethyl, showing he is reluctant to shoot someone in a city. |
“ | (Mika: AH- WHO DARES?) I dare, *sarcastic* m'lady. Now, yer' lucky that yer' famous and in public. Or you'd be dead on the floor right now. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Mika. |
“ | Tell ya' what. I'll do my best to clear yer' names. I'll make sure that people see what actually happened. That way, people ain't gonna attack yo or arrest you. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Katsu and Tori, promising to clear their names. |
“ | Ya' wouldn't want a bullet in yer' head, would ya? *spins his revolver* Be wise, you've fought hard yer' whole life to escape such nasty folk, would be a shame to waste it all 'ere. | „ |
~ Ethyl threatening Tatasia. |
“ | You gotta be shittin' me... *inhales* ALRIGHT, FINE. You can stay on my ship till y'all get new ones. | „ |
~ Ethyl reluctantly letting six people on his ship. |
“ | Patience, lady. The wanted poster? That's Desert Tumbler. He's an infamous outlaw, who kills for his own sick, twisted enjoyment. He ain't a good or honourable novakid, he's a psychopath. He's likely claimed hundreds of lives over t'years... | „ |
~ Ethyl about Desert. |
“ | Just simply get a disguise and some white stained glass, shape it into a gem shape and sell 'em off as diamonds, and you'll get rich quickly. You can encourage folk to buy 'em by hitting 'em where their vulnerable. | „ |
~ Ethyl, showcasing his ability to con people. |
“ | Desert, nobody could possibly have a more positive opinion of you then I... And I think your as crazy as popcorn on a flamin' hot stove. | „ |
~ Ethyl upon meeting Desert again. |
“ | Does this feel familiar to you, "old friend"? Your days are numbered. | „ |
~ Ethyl apprehending Desert. |
“ | Yer' welcome. You ain't seen as criminals no more. But don't forget what your friends told you. *sighs* I guess I owe y'all an apology for not being honest. Us novakids tend to not really dwell on the past. We like focusin' on the present, the now. It's why we never documented our own history. I thought Desert would've forgotten everything, or at least not gave a damn. I was wrong. It's time for me to acknowledge the corn. Me and Desert are indeed ex-partners in crime. But I need to explain this from the start... Gather in the main room. | „ |
~ Ethyl apologising to his crew for hiding his past. |
“ | Shakin' his hand was the worst moment of my life... We went on heists all the time, because teenage me was stupid and got manipulated easily. Desert... he seemed like a brother to me. He seemed to care, I admired him and thought he was cool. He made me trust him, and made me depend on him. I was too scared to say no. Little did I know... he was using me. When we were in our early twenties, we were infamous outlaws, wanted everywhere. | „ |
~ Ethyl reflecting on his regret. |
“ | I bribed the guards a day later, and they were greedy enough to accept it. So I collected my good ol' revolver from the box, and decided... It was time to go. I realised what I had done... I trusted someone I shouldn't of, and went down the bad route willingly... I wanted to make up for my crimes of armed robbery, disturbin' the peace, conning and scamming, and decided to exile myself. But first I wanted to see my mother... Apologise to her and say bye. But the sight I saw... It was too late... I had failed her... And she was gone. I then saw the cultist's purple ship, and I hijacked it. I went away from my star system... I was tempted to kill Desert, but I decided dwellin' on the past or revenge wasn't worth it. | „ |
~ Ethyl, feeling more regret for his past. |
~ Ethyl on why he is so against discrimination. |
“ | Katsu, ya don't need to sacrifice yourself to her. Everyone on that village will get out alive. I got a win-win situation plan... | „ |
~ Ethyl reassuring Katsu that he doesn’t need to sacrifice himself, as he has a plan to save both Tori and the village. |
“ | I know it's scary, but if you don't learn to get over that fear, you'll regret it. PTSD is nasty, I know. I get it sometimes from the sight of my dead mother. But if you let it weigh you down, you'll get nowhere. Life is like a horse race, if you let the past stop you in yer' tracks, the horse will slow down with you, and you won't be able to recover, because you've been overtaken, and you can't do anythin' to undo that. But, if you just focus on the present and not look back, the horse will continue to run, and you'll win the race and get yer' prize. The prize is that you'll succeed. You won't regret failing somethin' that mattered. Your trauma is tryin' it's best to make you lose the race, it's a hole in the ground, or maybe an idiot who's walked in front of you and is trying to block you. In that case, don't let it stop you. Charge through it, and don't stop running, whatever's in your way. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Tori about overcoming her fire phobia. |
“ | No you bloody ain't! You think it's alright to do what yer' doin'? Burnin' down villages and killin' florans who've done nothin' to you? They ain't all savage! In fact, the ones who I'd consider savage aren't even accepted by other florans. THAT proves yer' ideology is completely flawed! And your paps wanted the florans gone to protect his people, even if his actions were completely wrong... YOU want to destroy this ENTIRE star system and ALL SORTS OF RACES because of your own twisted, selfish goals! You can't justify this at all! This ain't peace, this is war, and you know it deep down... | „ |
~ Ethyl to Mika, calling her out on her flawed logic. |
“ | Be nice and civil, and turn yourself in. We wouldn't want to cause a scene, would we? | „ |
~ Ethyl using Mika’s own words against her. |
“ | (Mika: I AM MIKA AIKAWA!!! PERFECT IN EVERY WAY, A PRODIGY OF THE HYLOTL RACE, THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THEN ME!!! AND YOU... YOUR EVEN WEAKER THEN THE PLOT OF "10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT FLORANS"!!! ) And yer' punches are like yer' actin' skills. Weak, desperate and pathetic | „ |
~ Ethyl flooring Mika. |
“ | Go to hell. | „ |
~ Ethyl after finally shooting Mika. |
“ | Guys, Mika pressed a self destruct button... Get out of the base. (Katsu: WHAT ABOUT YOU?! YOUR OUR CAPTAIN!) Leave me here... I'm too injured to run properly, I know I can't escape. (Katsu: NO!!! WHY?!?) Y'all have bright futures. You may have branded me protectorate, but I'm still a criminal in the eyes of the law. Me bein' with you puts y'all in danger. So... take my ship. It's been fun servin' with you. You were my friends. Real ones I could trust. If you come look for me, you will die. I don't want that. (Tori: B-BUT... E-ETHYL...) (Robin: Your one of a kind... Don't! Let us help you!) I order you all to leave without me... My final order as captain. Goodbye. | „ |
~ Ethyl telling his crew to leave without him, demonstrating he is willing to die for the sake of others. |
“ | It's so great to see ya... I've missed you so much, and I feel so bad about what happened to you... If I wasn't manipulated by- (Ethyl's Mother: Shhh... It's alright... I'm sorry that I put you in that school, I didn't expect it to be like that... I should've placed you in the novakid school.) You had good intentions for me... You always did. You trusted me, and I threw that away in exchange for a life of crime. That... I can never forgive myself for. | „ |
~ Ethyl reuniting with his mother. |
“ | Well that's good, ain't it? Guess we've done a step to help make this universe cleaner. | „ |
~ Ethyl upon seeing Katsu’s home town more floran friendly. |
“ | Well, no problem. But I ain't takin' all the credit. Y'all both helped save the star system, taking out 3 stations. That was admirable. And you two have grown since I first saw you. As captain, I'm proud of you. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Katsu and Tori. |
Rise of the Stargazers[]
“ | We have our... different views, duties and methods, but we're still a crew. We ain't bound by one society, we live in the stars. That's what makes us, us. *sighs* I'm still glad that the man who ruined my life is dead... But there's no point in me being vengeful about it, I gotta let it go. That's how we novakids roll, we focus on the present. Besides, it made me who I am today. | „ |
~ Ethyl reflecting on his crew. |
“ | To people who discriminate, I've become somethin' of a devil. One who lurks around, waiting for a slip up. But it ain't so black and white. I don't simply fire my gun without thinkin' of other possible scenarios first, I just happen to be a quick thinker. Reason I didn't shoot Mika the first time was due to her status. And I ain't ever pullin' the trigger on anyone younger then eighteen. And an important thing is context. I don't wanna shoot someone who's actin' or kiddin' around for a meme video. | „ |
~ Ethyl on how he makes sure to be careful before he shoots, and also stating that he doesn’t hurt young people. |
“ | I ain't pure of heart, but I ain't heartless either. Some say that I'm an extremist, that I refuse to change people. But I know by their attitude if someone's beyond the changin' point. And unfortunately, there's a lotta people out there who are, so I kill 'em. | „ |
“ | Change what? We ain't the kind to bow down to society. Not in the slightest, ya' royal puppet. | „ |
~ Ethyl refusing to obey Moonquill. |
“ | Yeah, that ain't important, but... Unfortunately I saw that there's no hostages on your ships, so we can't save anyone... Tatasia and Night blocked yer' entrance, now you can only exit if they let ya, but nobody's gettin' on the ship. So, thing is... I found the self destruct button on yer' ship. But I have an escape pod, so I'll be out in time. (Moonquill: Shocked. W-What?!) Yup. So, you and your soldiers get back on the ship and leave us alone, or I'm gonna press the button... You value the lives of yer' crew like I do, right? Best you do what I say. | „ |
~ Ethyl threatening Moonquill. |
“ | Aight, then we'll find yer' crew. If anything happened to my crew, I'd search up and down for them. For now, stay with us. You've got catchin' up to do. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Azima, promising to find her crew. |
“ | Don't mess with those, 'ey could be the difference between life and death. | „ |
~ Ethyl warning Nightheart not to mess with bullets. |
“ | Really? (Shopkeeper: ... OH SHIT, NO NO I WAS JOKING!) And yer' attitude changes the moment ya' see me... typical coward. You think you got the right to be racist to my crewmates? | „ |
~ Ethyl to a shopkeeper after they tell Nightheart they don’t serve glitch. |
“ | People can think what they want of me. No need to be considerate of any of 'em if they go around ignoring good things we do, and that we do everything for good reasons. 'Sides, it would be hypocritical to ignore what we taught Katsu, and what we need to teach Robin... | „ |
~ Ethyl stating he doesn’t care how others see him. |
“ | Soon we'll be raidin' the temple. Everyone's gotta be ready, and get that staff and destroy it before Ezalco or Moonquill get 'er hands on it. Even Xochtal's comin'. I hope Robin gets those thoughts outta her head, cuz she's wrong about herself. Everyone in my crew is more then a mere asset, their friends, we all matter. I'll make sure Azima finds her crew after this, she must love 'em. I'll make sure everyone goes in, breaks that weapon and gets out safely. As captain... my responsibility is my crew, their well being, comfort and safety. And as part of the protectorate, I have to protect people from danger. | „ |
~ Ethyl’s thoughts before raiding the temple. |
“ | Eh, I've committed some sins... but ain't nearly as many as you. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Ezalco. |
“ | We emergency beamed ya'! Lexie was tellin' us what happened while he was monolougin'... I should've kept my suspicions of Xochtal from the start! | „ |
~ Ethyl after beaming up the crew. |
“ | You may think you don't contribute enough... But lemme reassure ya', that's completely wrong. First things first, we ain't about competition, we do what we feel like, and if people need us, we help 'em. It ain't about who can do the most, we all just do our best. Besides, you've done much for us... Yer' distractions are key, yer' a great talker. Plus, you've been excellent at stoppin' stargazers. You've got excellent acrobatics. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Robin. |
“ | If yer' welcome by everyone, you belong. Always remember that. | „ |
~ Ethyl’s advice for teams. |
“ | Ya' 100% sure that all of what you absorbed was stardust? (Xochtal: What?) While ya' thought I was dead, I was actually lurkin'. My crew kept ya' busy, but I saw what ya' did to my fellow novakids. I also had access to a lotta gunpowder, from my weapons and others, so one of those tanks ya' absorbed? (Azima: Oh ho ho... You didn't!) (Xochtal: TRICKSTER!!! DEVIL!!!) Indeed. It had most of the stardust taken out, and replaced with gunpowder. I kept some stardust mixed in to make sure you'd take it. And as you absorbed it, I lit a match, and ran out the wreckage. They all weakened yer' staff until you pulled that card, and ya' took the bait. | „ |
~ Ethyl on how he tricked Xochtal. |
“ | She got us... But we won't lose yet. | „ |
~ Ethyl’s thoughts after being captured by Moonquill. |
The Glitch Empire[]
“ | Difference in morality. I ain't a crook no more, I'm now shootin' out discrimination. Didn't hear? Racist comments will result in a bullet to the head. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Tetra. |
“ | I'm glad ya' got good intentions, or at least that's what I hope... But I still stand by my ideology. I believe that, while bad people exist and should be dealt with, the good should not be punished. If one person's controlling everybody, people aren't going to be able to live. It's important that people can be themselves. It's part of why I shoot discriminatory people, discrimination prevents the discriminated from being themselves out of fear. I want people to live good lives, and to enjoy themselves. Life is tough, but it's worth living. | „ |
~ Ethyl rejecting Stormlance. |
“ | Yer' breakin' the entire pack of eggs, throwin' em away, and replacing 'em with different ones! | „ |
~ Ethyl about Stormlance’s actions. |
“ | So, just a warning... the sword that Stormlance has, it's a very rare weapon... It has the ability to tear holes in reality, sort of like a portal but it's very dangerous, and presumably one way. Those who have set foot in a tear have never came back out, except if they wield the sword itself. | „ |
~ Ethyl warning everyone about Stormlance’s sword. |
“ | I do what I have to do. People can think however they like of me, I'm not after a good reputation. I do my best not to scare people, but unfortunately people have made a name out of me, and made me seem worse then I am. I'm not an active hunter, I only fire if I see it happenin'. But no matter how much everyone tries to get into peoples heads about how it ain't ok to discriminate, most of the time, they never listen to any sort of reasonin', they use "freedom of speech" as an excuse for their rotten behaviour. If they listen like Kumiko did, that's great, but they usually don't. People are scared to even walk the streets or go out without being discriminated against. People commit suicide because of it, their ashamed of who they are because of some imaginary norms bigots place on 'em. It's horrible. It ruins peoples lives... Discrimination is doin' nothin' but hurting the universe, it's a universal problem and it needs to go, perhaps the hard way if people won't enforce anythin' against it. It's really, really easy to not be discriminatory, but people still do it. I understand bein' scared of certain races due to some tensions, but you ain't scared if ya' got the courage to go up to yer' local floran and shout slurs at 'em. It's simple, if they don't discriminate against others, then they've got nothin' to fear. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Tetra. |
“ | Attention, everyone, I have an important announcement to make! Are you all inside? Alright, so I've just spoken with Azima and Ludvig, and I am revealing our next step. I am giving all the credit to those two for planning, but for this to work, all of us need to work together. We are going to rebuild the Terrene Protectorate. Now, we know this not goin' to be an easy task. There hasn't been a grand protector to guide them, and there has been no new protectors trained for over a year. So it's safe to say they the protectorate has been in limbo for a while. But, we are going to be the founders for the New Terrene Protectorate. From today, both of our crews are merged. We'll set up the new HQ somewhere eventually, but that can wait for now. We will defeat the Glitch Empire for good, and to do that, we need to unite and protect the universe again! If you have any questions, talk to me, Azima or Ludvig. | „ |
~ Ethyl’s announcement to both crews about rebuilding the protectorate. |
“ | People don't listen to truth, they listen to lies. | „ |
~ Ethyl about people. |
“ | We're all here for you... We'll get 'em back... We'll save everyone, and we'll stop the king. I made a promise to Tetra, that I'd do anything to stop 'em, even though she still won't approve... But, know that, no matter how funny you are, or whatever you do, what matters is that yer' still Nightheart. | „ |
~ Ethyl reassuring Nightheart. |
“ | It's a long story... If I told you all, it could be made into three books. Just note that I'm done hurting innocent people. I'm doin' my job like I should've done. | „ |
~ Ethyl to the bartender at his home town. |
“ | You've got a good reason to think that way... It's important to make innocent people feel safe. Katsu and Tori are great at it, and I assume Azima is too. HelI put my gun away most of the time for a reason. Heck, I left it in the ship. Unfortunately, no matter what 'ya do, the public and press talk a lotta' shit. With time, I kind of just accepted it with time. After all, there's no need to be considerate of people who stubbornly an' blindly believe the first thing 'ey hear. Yer' reputation doesn't define who you are. Be you, don't stress yerself out.. People see my methods as extreme, but sometimes, ya' have to do extreme methods, like the battle earlier. Scarin' those people wasn't somethin' I'd usually do, but it had to be done. More people got out that way. I just have to make sure I don't lose myself and my morals, don't wanna end up a delusional maniac. But, morality is very subjective. While we consider 'em villains, Mika and Xochtal considered 'emselves top tier folk, and Stormlance thinks he's doing the right thing. Most of the time, we all believe that we're doing the greater good, and I personally think we're doing what's right, every day. I also believe I'm doing the right thing by putting discrimination down the way I do. But, at the end of the day... how can one really tell who's right or wrong, without using personal beliefs? The truth is, we all follow our own beliefs, and assign our own morals to 'em. | „ |
~ Ethyl on how he believes morality is a matter of perspective. |
“ | I'm sorry I ain't the best person around, but... I hope you can be proud of the good things I've done after your death... We'll save the universe together. | „ |
~ Ethyl apologising to his dead mother, and promising to save the universe. |
“ | That's very nice, but are ya' sure we can trust her after everything she's done? | „ |
~ Ethyl to Azima about Moonquill. |
“ | This war... It ain't about good vs evil, it's a battle of different beliefs clashin'... I've always believed in a world where anyone can be themselves, and do what they like, as long as it ain't hurtin' others. I choose to dispose of the rotten parts, before the rot ruins the overall good stuff. Not everyone thinks like that. Hell, I'm glad there ain't many people who think like me, cuz some people would take it too far, enforce negative delusions start hurtin' the same people they swore to protect. The king took that path, and he has to be stopped. It's not just my duty to stop people like 'em, but it's also my duty to not end up a monster. | „ |
~ Ethyl on the current conflict. |
“ | That's actually what happened to me. I don't want us all to end up like that. We were all hurt by Xochtal. But if we keep distrusting everyone just because of him, then he's won, even in death. Do you wanna give him the satisfaction of a posthumous victory? | „ |
~ Ethyl to Robin. |
“ | So... Seein' everythin' at face value... Moonquill. You can join on a few conditions. One, everyone on this ship has to agree. Two, we all will be keepin' a close eye on ya' at all times. Three, if we catch ya' doin' anythin' funny... You will be placed in the holding cell at the back. Do you agree to these conditions (Moonquill: Accepting. I agree... I understand how negative things have been... I don't just want to be your ally, I want to be friends, too... Your all great people who've saved many lives. I never really had many friends in my life, as I've mostly been in the castle and didn't leave the star system until I went to capture you. ) I see... I see somethin' in you, that I didn't see in Xochtal. You were raised to think the way ya' did. After a while, you had some shockin' realisations... You questioned yerself for ages, but after denyin' it, you took action. You've grown since we first met ya'. Azima and Ludvig told me how you acted, and... Unlike Xochtal, witnessing ya' change gives me no reason to doubt ya. Of course, we have to be careful, but we can't live in fear forever. | „ |
~ Ethyl and a redeemed Moonquill. |
“ | I'm aware I have an awful reputation thanks to rumours... I've never really used to care what others think. I just saw it held people down. While I still don't really care what most people think of me, one thing is important. You need to be able to trust me, as a protector. *holds up his manipulator* I need to make people feel safer. By brushing off everything as demonising me, I'm not doing anythin'. I need to show people that I'm trying to do good for everyone. So... You know that mysterious "Black Nebula" crew? I'm their captain. Katsu, Tori, Tatasia, Robin, Nightheart and Lexie are my crew members. Even got proof of it. We kept it secret to avoid being bombarded with pressure, but right now, the universe is at stake. We're going to rebuild the protectorate and take a march against King Stormlance. | „ |
~ Ethyl to a protector. |
“ | Sad thing is, your lives were all fabricated. Your memories, friends, families, personalities are all fake. Randomly generated and modified in the real king's quest for domination, to control everything to what he wants. We have proof, as well... I'm sorry. | „ |
~ Ethyl to Stormlance’s victims. |
“ | Who said I'm runnin'? I'm merely sneakin' around, ready to strike... Sometimes that's the best ya' can do. It's what caused yer' demise, ain't it? | „ |
~ Ethyl to Xochtal in his dream. |
“ | We won't let star systems be detonated... But we won't in hell give in and let you do this, either. But, honestly... Enough blood has been spilled. Look, I don't know your past, but I'm good at readin' people, and from what I see, some bad things seem to have happened to 'ya, to the point that it's clouded you as a person. I suffered from experiences that shaped me into who I am today, as well. Somethin' made 'ya want to enforce ultimate order, while my goal has been to end discrimination for good. We've both resorted to extremes to do what we thought was best. But, there are different levels of extremes. I don't believe in hurtin' innocent folk who've done nothin' wrong. I know peace, and it's not forcefully takin' over planets and killin' people. If you want to make peace, then stop this. Trust the new protectorate. A true peaceful world... is a world of balance and freedom, with the good people here to protect against the bad. | „ |
~ Ethyl trying to convince Stormlance to stand down. |
“ | This is why ya' don't piss off the New Terrene Protectorate! | „ |
~ Ethyl to Stormlance during the final battle. |
“ | HOW ABOUT NO?! I'm one nasty ol' intruder, and I'll wreck this vile contraption my own way! I WON'T LET YOU DESTROY THE UNIVERSE!!! (Backup Plan AI: The moment you let go of this pedal, the autopilot will resume the mission to destroy all non captured planets.) I know... So how's this? I won't let go. | „ |
~ Ethyl in the backup plan. |
“ | I've lived a long life of mixed tales. I started off as a cold outlaw, only after personal gain. Then, my mother died, and I began shootin' discrimination. Yet, while I was doing what I thought was good, I still remained cold, and still acted like a criminal. Then, I met you guys... You helped me become a proper hero, and protector, like my mom wanted. We fought a lot of foes together, and went through many changes, but we always came out on top. I'm honoured to die this way, talkin' to y'all one more time... and I'm finally going to make her proud. I promised her we'd protect the universe, and we did it... I kept my promise. | „ |
~ Ethyl reflecting on his life. |
“ | Keep goin' forward, all of 'ya. You feel sad now, but I promise, this is the best ending for everyone. Take care of each over, and live yer' best lives. I'm so glad I met all of 'ya. Goodbye... | „ |
~ Ethyl’s last words before sacrificing himself. |
“ | Yup, that's the new Protectorate... Over ten years, they've only gotten better. The universe is safe, thanks to 'em all. Now, I ain't gonna say they all lived happily ever after or other typical stuff, cuz' there will always be conflict, problems and turmoil, but that's why the protectors exist, ain't it? They fight it. But, my goal in life was to make the universe a better place, and thanks to everyone else, I've succeeded. I thank you for readin' our story, long, ain't it? Well, life is long. I've been dead for 10 years. Many of my teammates got married... Also, for all you out there, please, take our lessons to heart. Because, we want you to be happy, and for you to be the best people you can be. I bid you farewell. | „ |
~ Ethyl’s spirit narrating at the end. |

Trivia[]
- Despite being the main protagonist, Ethyl does not have the most screentime. Katsu Umino has more screentime he does and has more focus. Although Ethyl is still the protagonist as he is the one who drives the plot. The same applies for the sequel, where Robin Reklaw gets the most screen time and focus. However, Ethyl is still leading and looking after the team, and is even in the end the one who takes out the main villain. This changes in the third story, where he finally gets the most focus as the protagonist. Ironically, he isn’t the one who defeats Stormlance.
