You fight with valor, noble swordsman, but I know the burning passion of my heart will carry me through!

~ Jonathan's vow to protect Nezuko for his dying opponent and his last words in the fight.
Jonathan Joestar is one of the two titular main protagonists of the DEATH BATTLE episode, "Tanjiro VS Jonathan Joestar". He is an honorable British gentleman and Hamon user and the first of the JoJos. He is Tanjiro Kamado's former arch nemesis/rival.
You poor wretch! Shackled by the chains of this harpy's insidious mind control. On my honor, as a gentleman, I will free you!
„
~ Jonathan's misunderstanding of Tanjiro and Nezuko.
Jonathan is a lot like his opponent, Tanjiro. He is a noble man who fights with honor, and it is important for him to keep that honor as a gentleman. It is shown in the battle that even though Jonathan is better using hand-to-hand combat, he uses a sword for a majority of the fight in honor of how his opponent was using a sword until he no longer has it and is forced to use his fists.
However, as shown in the battle, Jonathan became tunnel visioned in his goal of defeating Dio, to the point of him mistaking Nezuko for a villain who is controlling Tanjiro. Eventually, when Jonathan wins and leaves Tanjiro in a dying state (presumably unintentionally due to him stating he wanted to free him at the start), he is horrified to learn that Tanjiro and Nezuko were siblings and Tanjiro was just trying to protect her. Filled with shame and regret, Jonathan made a vow to protect Nezuko and ended Tanjiro's life without suffering in an act of mercy.
History[]
Jonathan is first seen in a sword stand-off with Tanjiro and his demon sister, Nezuko. Jonathan is under the idea that Tanjiro is being controlled by Nezuko and that she is one of Dio's minions. Seeing no way out, Tanjiro motions Nezuko to leave as he and Jonathan do battle. Initially, Tanjiro thinks of JoJo jokingly, asking if he bumped his head and calling him "adorable." Jonathan, meanwhile, is impressed by Tanjiro's prowess, and fights with his sword and only using his fists when without his weapon.
Eventually, as the two trade blows, Tanjiro's sense of smell alerts him of Jonathan's Hamon and is now aware of how to stop him. Tanjiro starts slashing at Jonathan even more viciously, aiming for his neck. He even breaks JoJo's sword and stabs him through the chest, hoping to cut his lungs. However, Jonathan manages to dodge the attack by a couple inches, with the Demon Slayer's sword now stuck in Jonathan. With both combatants now unarmed, Jonathan uses his signature move on Tanjiro: Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, punching Tanjiro several times before blowing him into a rock at terminal speeds.
With Tanjiro left dying, he finally reveals and clarifies to Jonathan that Nezuko is his sister. Jonathan, realizing his mistake, starts crying in regret and dishonor for what he has done. Picking up Tanjiro, he makes a vow for his fallen foe, that he would protect Nezuko with his life. Tanjiro is left feeling bittersweet, but happy as JoJo uses his Hamon to end his life in a peaceful and merciful end. Later, Jonathan approaches Nezuko and holds his hand out to her, which she initially hesitates. Eventually though, Nezuko would go with Jonathan, albeit likely on shaky terms.

Tanjiro VS Jonathan Joestar (Demon Slayer VS JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) - DEATH BATTLE!
Trivia[]
Jonathan is notable for being one of the first combatants to feel remorse for killing their opponent. The only other combatant who felt remorse for killing their opponent prior was Superman.
The ending of Jonathan's battle with Tanjiro is considered one of the saddest moments in DEATH BATTLE, though the abruptness of Jonathan's emotional breakdown has been slightly criticized.
The abruptness of Jonathan feeling remorse for Tanjiro's death was intentional, according to the storyboard artist John Mitchell, as it emulates how emotional scenes are handled in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. There were originally two extra shots of Jonathan realizing what he has done and something else with Tanjiro before being told to take them out.
