"Um... h-hi there... my name is Katayama Isao... u-Ultimate Physicist... it... it's nice to meet you!" -Isao introducing himself to Iwata

Katayama Isao is the overall overarching protagonist of Danganronpa 1.7: Magazine Reload. His title is the Ultimate Physicist.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Isao was always a rather self-isolating individual, and therefore spent much of his free time either studying physical phenomenons or gaming instead of playing with other kids. He did, however, form a close friendship with Chihiro Fujisaki, whom had similar insecurities and personalities.

Pre-Tragedy[]

Isao was one of the many ultimate students at hopes peak, and unfortunately due to unspecified circumstances(caused by Despair) fell into a deep comatose state, along with 15 others.

Pre-Game[]

Isao was the only student whom actually woke up before the kidnappings and smuggling into America took place for the killing games to occur. He ended up finding a Future Foundation file containing info on the events of the 78th killing game, where he also unfortunately found out of his only friend's tragic death. He made sure to keep the drive safe, but ended up getting incapacitated once more by Monokuma agents. Luckily, however, he managed to avoid having the drive found as he was being smuggled into the game.

78th Standby Game[]

Chapter I[]

Isao ends up awaking once more, still with the drive on hand. He ends up hiding it out of the sight range of the camera in his room. After Mei dies, he actually ends up being extremely helpful in the first trial, with both rock hard evidence in the form of his lab being tampered with as well as an alibi for the time the bomb was set. After Ishikawa Yoshikai got executed, he realized he was most likely not gonna survive.

Chapter II[]

Monokuma ends up revealing that the motive for this chapter is that if nobody kills anyone, each of their lives will be placed on a coin toss, with heads meaning the victim has nothing done to them, while tails means they immediately get executed, and upon hearing this, Katayama realizes he most likely will not survive, and was willing to be a victim secretly. Isao visits Iwata to console and relate with him after the latter's closest friend Mei ended up dying, and explained his situation with Fujisaki, and how he was in comatose when the latter ended up dead. they end up hugging each other, and Iwata then considers Isao to be the only one who truly understands him. This is the first and pretty much only time Isao stops stuttering and speaks confidently.

Death[]

“Oh… B-Bunko… i… must have… hurt you bad… f-for you t-to want me dead…? I… im… so sorry… a-ah… c-chi… chihiro…”

-Katayama as he’s bleeding out.

During the same night he actually spoke with Iwata, Obi calls for a meeting to be held in the entertainment room. Isao decides to record a video in case of his untimely death before doing so and once he's done recording at around 3:10, decides to meet Bunko.

Isao Dead Body

Isao's corpse.

When Isao entered, he ended up getting shot from the vent above by Bunko, and got nicked in the aorta, causing him to sadly succumb to the hemorrhaging. His last thoughts were of his late friend.

After Death[]

Final Message

Isao's last message.

In chapter VI, the survivors find the drive Isao left behind, and ended up playing it. They found out about the past game, as well as some clues leading to the mastermind, and, as a dead man even, Isao still managed to be the indirect reason the remaining 4 got to live and began to rebuild the western world via the Future Foundation.

As Iwata is leaving the facility, Mei, along with Isao, appear as hallucinations that fade away, causing the survivor to break into tears.

Appearance[]

Isao is a slim individual of slightly above average height. He dons a plain white lab coat, a teal shirt with a design on it, white flats, as well as navy blue pants. He has large, almost doll like eyes, pale skin, and poofy white hair.

Personality[]

Isao is a timid and shy individual who is rather asocial, and tends to stutter a lot. He also has a rather prominent issue of being far too overly apologetic, even apologizing in his final moments to Obi because he thought he hurt her feelings in some way for her to want him dead. Despite this, Isao manages to be by far the sweetest, kindest, and most gentle individual in the game. He is rather mature, and uses his wits to assist in the first trial. Despite his sweet and soft nature, he suffers from underlying insecurities and depressive symptoms, being pretty pessimistic on his own outcome, as well as belittling himself at times. He tends to be more confident in his words when talking about his passions, most notably gaming and physics, shown prominently in his free time events. While he does tend to be rather shy and stutter a lot, when he visits Iwata, he manages to keep a steady and rather even tone throughout the conversation, attempting to console and relate to the latter, to which he succeeds. Overall, within the jumble of morally grey and flawed characters in the game, he manages to stand out as a beacon of hope and kindness.
