Overview

I'm no hero. Or at least, that's what I keep telling myself. I don't exactly know who I am. A couple days ago I didn't even know I was an angel.
~ Makoto to Asia Argento after the latter commends him for protecting Aika Kiryuu from the exorcist Freed Sellzen.

Makoto Fujiwara is the main protagonist of the High School DxD fanfiction series Marriage of Heaven and Hell. He is a second-year High School student at Kuoh Academy in Class 2-B. He is the only son of Gabriel.

He is a member of the Occult Research Club, and the first member to be not part of Rias Gremory's peerage as an angel, often acting as its de-facto leader whenever Rias and Akeno are away, in addition to leading his own peerage of angels.

Personality[]

He is best described as the "brilliant but lazy" type, at least at first, with his first character-defining moment being skipping English class because he claims he can "take that class in [his] sleep." His laziness becomes a less-defining trait as he becomes more involved with the Occult Research Club and determined to live up to Rias Gremory's reputation.

He often tends to get defensive in suggestive situations, partly due to the fact he will turn into a fallen angel if he succumbs to lust. This often puts him at odds with the devils in the Occult Research Club, particularly Akeno and Rias, who are more sensous in nature. He slowly gets more comfortable around them, eventually to the point where he is willing to, on occasion, be in the Hot Springs or Sauna with them.

His confidence can be seen as a charming point, but he also can be proven to be overconfident in a fight and underestimate an opponent's ability, such as his first fight with Raynare. He tends to stay mostly aloof, but isn't afraid to show sadness or anger, particularly to close friends or his enemies.

He also can be prone to anxiety, especially fearing that he does not measure up to Rias' reputation. He is also largely selfless in nature and gets worried when members of the club in danger, getting a severe anxiety attack when Rias was poisoned shortly before she was supposed to face Sairaorg Bael in a Rating Game.

Biography[]

Makoto is the only child born to the seraph Gabriel and her husband, Hikaru Fujiwara, born a little over a year after his mother fled from heaven after Halja, the Norse Goddess of Death, overthrew Heaven to steal the Holy System and its power, resetting the timeline with a majority of the Longinus users written out of the universe. He was raised as a normal child, with his mother using enchantments to hide the growth of his angel wings. He was, however, taught how to use angelic healing magic. When he was about age 9, his father disappeared. His mother refused to disclose the nature of his disappearance, but it was eventually revealed that he was murdered by the Himejima clan for his connection to Baraqiel during a weekend that he was staying with grandparents.

He was enrolled in Kuoh Academy at the beginning of his middle school career after his mother was hired as a Counselor. His mother wanted the high female-to-male ratio to be an opportunity for him to find a girlfriend, but he was frustrated instead with the lack of male students to be friends with. His friendship with Aika led to him becoming friends with Matsuda and Motohama, though he quickly started to become annoyed by their increasingly perverted antics and unsuccessfully tried to distance himself from the two.

Powers & Abilities[]

Dividing Gear[]

A variant of Longinus that inexplicably survived Halja's purge of Longinus Sacred Gears. It was originally taken from Vali Lucifer by Issei Hyodo during a fight and appears to have transferred to Makoto. It takes away power from an individual the user comes in contact with and transfers it to the user. Its power is tied to the user's emotion, and Makoto was initially only able to summon it in moments of intense anger, like when Asia was murdered under Halja's orders, but is later able to channel it through the more positive desire to protect his colleagues in the Club.

Scale Mail[]

Dividing Gear's Balance Breaker. Makoto first uses this in his first fight with Halja after siphoning her power with Dividing Gear. He is initially only able to use it through the use of Dividing Gear and its duration solely depended on the power he received, with the Legendary Sage only giving him about one second of transformation while the combined power of Serafall Leviathan, Ajuka Beelzebub, and Kuroka gave him several minutes. After training in Tannin's mountain territory, he is able to achieve a perfect transformation on his own power, first triggered by his determination to stop Riser Phenex from peeping on the girls in the territory's hot springs.

Power of Retribution[]

A holy variant of the Bael clan's Power of Destruction that passed on from the Seraph Gabriel. It has similar properties to Rias' usage and can be amplified with use of the Dividing Gear. Like Dividing Gear, its power is tied to the user's emotion, flickering when Makoto is shown to have conflicting feelings on whether or not to spare Raynare.

Armor Break[]

A highly experimental technique that Makoto developed to bypass Hagane Sasaki's armor. While it is able to break through otherwise hard to destroy armor, it is unable to distinguish between armor and clothing and can be seen as an perverted stripping technique by those unaware of the technique's true purpose.

Senjutsu[]

Makoto has a basic grasp of senjutsu after an epiphany he had from a conversation with Koneko, observing their shared connection to the spiritual. While he can't use it to attack, he can use it to dispel curses such as the one Diodora Astaroth inflicted on his peerage to brainwash them. However, he was not successful at using it to cure Misla Bael's sleep disease.

Angelic Healing[]

He learned this ability when he was young, even before he broke his mother's enchantment. It has been shown to heal wounds and injuries of both others and himself, similar to Twilight Healing. However, unlike Twilight Healing, it is unable to combat fatigue.

Light-Based Weapons[]

Makoto can summon swords of light to fight. He found out how to summon them by observing the fallen angels who attacked Aika. He can summon multiple swords at once to fight more skilled opponents like Raynare. He uses these less after discovering his more advanced abilities.

Enhanced Abilities[]

His enhanced agility as an angel has allowed to do feats such as leap over a fence. This scared the track team when he tried out for the track team and they feared they would be accused of doping. He also has a strong grasp on foreign languages.
