Ren Serizawa is a supporting character in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) fanfiction Abraxas, written by Hrodvitnon.

He is the son of the late Dr. Ishirō Serizawa, leader and figurehead of Monarch. He has had a distant and somewhat troubled relationship with his overworked father for years, and an awkward relationship with Serizawa's close partner and surrogate daughter-figure Dr. Vivienne Graham.

Although Ren doesn't officially work for Monarch, he is in contact with them while leading an expedition to examine the Yonaguni Monument, with Dr. Houston Brooks noting that Serizawas and a marine fascination seem to go hand-in-hand, until the island is attacked.

Personality[]

Ren is less genuinely stoic than his father, coming across as aloof and projecting an icy mien to hold back his insecurities. He isn't as connected to the Titans as Ishirō was, but after witnessing the Yonaguni battle, he comes to develop an understanding of why Serizawa and Vivienne all but worshipped the Titans as forces of nature so much. He develops a soft spot for the newborn Titan Manda after the baby sea monster approaches him.

Trivia[]

  • Ren is one of several Godzilla villains who receives Adaptational Heroism in Abraxas, alongside Monster X, Manda and Scylla. Unlike the former two, this version of Ren was ironically introduced before the villainous canon version.
  • According to Hrodvitnon on her Tumblr blog:
    • Ren had a more rebellious phase in his youth.
    • Ren had a neutral opinion of the Titans before the Mass Awakening and the Yonaguni battle.
    • Ren in Abraxas looks like the canon, villainous Ren who was portrayed by Shun Oguri, except with a more business-casual dress sense.
