Tsurugi Kinjo is one of the main characters as well as an anti-villain in the korean Danganronpa fangame duology Danganronpa Another and Super Danganronpa Another 2, he serves as the deuteragonist of Danganronpa Another and as the overarching protagonist of Super Dangarnonpa Another 2.

He is a student who entered Hope's Peak due to his talent as the Ultimate Police Officer and found himself in a Killing Game with other 14 students. He then dedicated his life to protect the students and prevent murders.

While he's more of a delusional villain for most of the series, he's still undeniably heroic at several points, even forming the Kisaragi Foundation to combat crime during the Tragedy and going on a mission to rescue the participants of the second Killing Game.

Personality[]

Despite his malice and delusions, Tsurugi is shown to be a noble and protective person. He was genuinely friendly to Yuki, wanted to protect the rest of the participants from being killed and didn’t hesitate to attack Monokuma when it tried to convince the participants to commit murder. As a cop his biggest wish was to rid the world of crime, which is why he formed the Kisaragi Foundation to combat crime during the Tragedy.

Duing the Killing Game, he was deeply protective of the students, always trying to make sure nobody dies and would feel remorse for not managing to prevent a murder even if it was not his fault. The only exceptions were the ones who committed murder or another kind of crime, as Tsurugi would feel no pity for those. During chapter 2, he declared that he would only protect the students who followed his orders, ad people who refused were "potential criminals". Despite this, he still showed some concern for the students who chose not to follow him, and admitted he would also help them escape if he had the opportunity.

His true malice comes when dealing with criminals, he believed that all criminals deserved death, even if what they did was accidental or necessary, and even reprimanded some of the participants for feeling bad about the culprits. While he became less extreme, he never got over his deep hatred for criminals.

Throughout the series he also followed the "Ends justify the means" philosophy, believing that sometimes evil is necessary to defeat a greater evil. As described by Rei, he doesn't mind sacrifices as long as he can achieve something greater.

He would sometimes lose his temper very easily, especially when talking to criminals or when the participants talk about things he considers nonsensical. Overall, Tsurugi was villainous at several points, but his personality improved after chapter 4 when his attempted suicide failed: ever since then, he became less delusional, acknowledged the fact that his actions were wrong and became a better person despite keeping most of his corrupting qualities. He also became calmer ever since then, almost not caring when someone questions or calls him out for his actions. That being said, he still remained a anti-hero with actions that are questionable at best.

Biography[]

Background[]

Tsurugi Kinjo was a well-respected policeman even before he joined Hope’s Peak, being inspired by his father Kinjo Yuu, who was the Chief of the Police Department. Because of that, he was invited to join Hope’s Peak in the class of 79 and spent three months studying there.

After the Tragedy happened, him and the other 14 students were rescued by Yamato Kisaragi and sent to the Kisaragi Foundation to protect themselves from the Monokumas. However, Utsuro and Akane Taira, who were inside the facility, knocked out all sixteen students and wiped out their memories. After the Kisaragi Foundation was remodeled to look like Hope’s Peak, all students (with the exception of Yamato) were put on the 1st floor, with their memories modified to make it look like they had just joined Hope’s Peak.

Prologue[]

As they thought it was their first day in Hope’s Peak, Tsurugi Kinjo and the rest of the classmates introduced each other. During the Entrance Ceremony, Monokuma explained that they were destined to live in the school forever and the only way to get out was to kill someone and clear the Class Trial.

That infuriated Tsurugi Kinjo, who attacked Monokuma and tried to arrest him, but the latter used a machine gun to shoot bullets near Tsurugi, showing him that confronting Monokuma was a terrible idea. He quickly gave up on the idea of fighting by himself Monokuma afterwards.

Chapter 1[]

During the first chapter, Tsurugi Kinjo was an excellent leader who wanted to protect the students and came up with the idea of investigating as much as they can in order to find a way to escape.

After the motives came out, Mitsuhiro Higa started planning a murder and tried to lure Tsurugi Kinjo to kill him, but due to Haruhiko messing up the nameplates on Tsurugi and Kiyoka’s rooms, he ended up accidentally luring Kiyoka Maki and had to kill her instead.

After Kiyoka Maki was murdered, he investigated the crime scene and ended up finding out who the killer is before the class trial even started, but didn’t reveal it because he wanted the participants to find out for themselves, in order to make them more efficient. However, he still gave Yuki plenty of tips during the trial to help him find the killer. After a while, the killer, Mitsuhiro Higa, was found out and executed for committing murder and having the most votes.

After the execution, Kinata Inori started crying and asked how they could be composed when a friend just died. That angered Tsurugi, who called out Kinata for calling a murderer his friend. Afterwards, he revealed his philosophy that all criminals should die and deserve no sympathy, much to the shock of everyone. Ever since then he also became much more aggressive and wrathful than before.

Chapter 2[]

The day after the class trial, Tsurugi gathered everyone at the dining room. He explained that he still wants to protect them and, in order to do that, he’s going to sort them by the ones who will follow him or not, those who do not follow him will be excluded from his protection and be treated as “potential culprits”. Rei Mekaru, Kizuna Tomori and Kinji Uehara all chose to not follow him and went solo, being officially excluded from his protection.

Monokuma came to the dining room and announced that, since a Class Trial was recently cleared, the second floor’s entrance opened. There, Tsurugi and the other participants investigated as much as they could.

After the investigation, Akane asked Tsurugi if he was truly going to ignore Rei, Kizuna and Kinji, which Tsurugi confirmed by explaining he’s just “sacrificing the few to protect the majority” while reminding that they chose to not be protected, and that made Akane slap him in anger. Despite disapproving of his actions, Akane still chose to follow him.

A few days after the second motive was given, a murder happened: Suddenly a fire started inside the Power Room and Tsurigi, along with Rei, Kinji and Ayame, picked up fire extinguishers and used it to extinguish the fire. After the flames were gone, they all found Kizuna Tomori’s corpse inside the power room. Once again, Tsurugi investigated as much as he could for the Class Trial.

During the Class Trial it was found out that Akane Taira accidentally stabbed Kizuna in self-defense at some point and thus was semi-responsible for the murder, while the actual culprit was a different person who gave the finishing blow to Kizuna. This made Tsurugi angry since to his eyes Akane was a criminal who would not be punished due to the trial rules.

After the real culprit, Ayame Hatano, was found out and executed, Tsurugi was even angrier and told Akane that she should commit suicide for her crime. Although the others tried to defend her by claiming she would have died if she hadn’t stabbed Kizuna, Tsurugi explained that she still endangered their lives by hiding the truth during the class trial.

The day after the trial, most of the participants, mostly haruhiko, start arguing with Tsurugi due to his actions, but he insists that following his orders is the best solution to prevent murders. They then decide to no longer support Tsurugi, with Yuki being his only “friend” left.

Chapter 3[]

Since another Class Trial was cleared, the gates to the third floor opened and everyone started investigating there. Tsurugi and Yuki found a graduation album with a old photo of "Hanzo Kisaragi". Tsurugi deduced that he was most likely someone who studied at Hope's Peak several years ago, but they were confused about why the album was in there. Later the third "motive" came out, where Monokuma made all participants, one per one, enter a small cabin where they watched a video, which monokuma claimed it was their "desire" and that it would come to reality if they killed someone. Monokuma also made a rule that nobody is allowed to share what they saw in the video.

Later Tsurugi was walking at midnight during the third floor when he found Kakeru Yamaguchi's dead body on the library. He was then knocked out by the culprit and stayed unconscious until near the end of the investigation. By the time he woke up, Kanata Inori was also killed and the other participants had already investigated enough. Tsurugi tried to investigate more and ended up coming late to the class trial.

In the class trial it was revealed that the culprit, Kinji Uehara, was the one who attacked Tsurugi to prevent him from discovering about his complex murder plan. It was also revealed that Kinji murdered because Monokuma was keeping the children of the church hostage and that, if he hadn't murdered anyone, Monokuma would have killed all of the children. Despite his sympathetic motive, Tsurugi still called him out, saying that he's still a serial killer and that his two victims also didn't deserve to die, but Kinji also called him out on his hypocrisy, since Tsurugi also believed in "discarding a few lives to save the majority" like he planned with Kizuna, Kinji and Rei.

After Kinji was executed, Tsurugi Kinjo complained about Monokuma helping him commit the murder, claiming that he was no longer acting like a "judge" and instead a "accomplice". After a few moments Monokuma stopped working and Mikako took the opportunity to lead everyone to a possible exit in a phohibited place, only for them to find out that the "prohibited place" also didn't have a exit. Monokuma then mocked them for thinking they could escape without murder.

Chapter 4[]

While he and Yuki were investigating on the fourth floor they found a picture of "Yamato Kisaragi". Yuki thought he was Hanzo Kisaragi at first, but Tsurugi explained that the picture was too recent for it to be him. Tsurugi also told Yuki to not tell the others about the photo, claiming they are not trustworthy.

After the last trial, everyone was unmotivated and sad, so Monokuma tried to "cheer them" by forcing them to enter a ballroom and have a sophisticated party. He also told them to wear party outfits, which they did. Tsurugi's party outfit was a black uniform with yellow buttons and a rose on the right side. As part of the party, he danced with Rei Mekaru. After the party was over, Monokuma revealed that he locked the doors and that they will only be unlocked if a murder occurs. He also reveals that he won't bring new food to the ballroom, meaning all food there is limited and they will die of hunger if a murder does not occur. He also explains that "suicide" will not count as murder and thus be in vain.

After the reveal, Tsurugi started to investigate as much as he could to try to find a way out that does not involve murder. Upon discovering that there's a Arsenal full of weapons, he started to guard it to prevent anyone from getting a weapon. He also started to eat only one meal per day due to the limited food.

After several days, everyone was at their breaking point due to not eating enough, even Yuki tried to get a weapon only to be stopped by Tsurugi. Tsurugi was desperate and didn't want anyone to commit murder so he came up with a solution. He went to the meeting where everyone (except for Rei) was discussing and overheard Teruya's plan of sacrificing two people to escape. Tsurugi instead proposed his plan: he put several pistols in the desk and told everyone to commit suicide, claiming it is a better option than killing someone. he explains that "killing in order to survive" is a nonsensical idea and that dying is a better solution.

Everyone disagree since the plan involves everyone dying, but Tsurugi insists on it and says he's gonna force everyone to commit suicide and kill himself later. Haruhiko tries to stop him but gets knocked out. Yuki also tries to stop him but gets knocked out, along with Haruhiko on his second attack attempt. However, due to Utsuro's divine luck, Tsurugi ended up stumbling and fell, allowing everyone to tie him up.

On the next day, Haruhiko was murdered by a gun shot and Monokuma gave everyone food so that they will have energy to investigate and participate in the class trial. While they were eating, Tsurugi continued to defend his actions, claiming he did nothing wrong and that he was still on his mind while doing it. Later he started to investigate the crime scene and confirmed to Yuki that the death was not instant, even pointing out that the true cause of death was excessive blood loss.

At the of class trial, Satsuki Iranami kept admitting that she was the one who killed Haruhiko, but everyone kept ignoring her since she got many things about the crime wrong. Most of their discussion was based on Mikako's account, she claimed that Haruhiko, Satsuki and Teruya were the only people she saw go to the arsenal, and everyone started accusing Teruya because of that. Later, it was found out that Teruya indeed tried o kill Haruhiko, but wasn't the real killer of the case. Tsurugi also tried to accuse Mikako, but everyone disagreed, claiming that her account matches with what Teruya and Satsuki experienced.

Later Yuki stated that Satsuki was the only one who could be the culprit based on Mikako's account, but everyone was confused about why the culprit would admit their crime so easily. Tsurugi also questioned how Satsuki was able to come up with the locked room mystery, and Yuki came up with the theory that Haruhiko, the victim, was the one who trapped the exit from inside after getting shot by the culprit. That infuriated Tsurugi, he could never accept the idea of a victim helping their killer, and tried to refute Yuki by saying Haruhiko couldn't have done it since "his death was instant". However, Yuki called him out, saying that Tsurugi himself was the one who revealed that Haruhiko's death was not instant.

After lots of arguing, Tsurugi Kinjo fainted and Monokuma took him to the dormitory. Afterwards, the class trial continued normally and everyone was able to leave the ballroom after the culprit, Satsuki Ranami, was executed, though they were still trapped inside the Kisaragi Foundation.

Chapter 5[]

Super Danganronpa Another 2[]

Tracking down the second Killing Game[]

Tsurugi Kinjo was able to form the Kisaragi Foundation, with members such as Ryutaro Maki, Keisuke Iranami, Rei Mekaru, etc. They started combating all kinds of crimes during the Tragedy. Primarily, they started a mission to stop the Void, an organization which had a plan to create another Killing Game with the intention of resurrecting Utsuro and his Divine Luck. The Killing Game was meant to happen in a virtual world within the Neo World Program and was going to be hosted by an Alter Ego known as Mikado Sannoji.

During the mission, a professional criminal known as Syobai Hashimoto was working for Mikado, but Tsurugi hired the same criminal to work as a double agent to help defeat Void while secretly pretending to help Void, and Syobai accepted the deal. Tsurugi decided to not share that information with the other members of the Kisaragi Foundation in order to prevent leaks. Thanks to Syobai, Tsurugi was able to find the location of the Neo World Program and eventually, he and Syobai were able to turn off the virtual world but sadly 10 people had already died during it. Rei Mekaru was extremely angry at Tsurugi for hiding information about the double agent, even blaming him for Teruya’s death.

Upon the virtual world shutdown, only two of the participants were able to leave: Iroha and Yoruko. It was later revealed that Alter Ego Mikado was still alive and was keeping the real Yuki Maeda inside the virtual world. He also used his hacking abilities to lock all doors in the facility, making it impossible for anyone to escape. Mikado told Tsurugi, Rei, Syobai, Yoruko and Iroha to return to the virtual world, and they reluctantly accepted after realizing they had no choice, it was either that or Yuki Maeda would stay in the virtual world and everyone would die of starvation.

Entering the virtual world[]

Upon returning to the virtual world, everyone continued investigating for the final class trial, where Mikado promised that, if they solved all mysteries of the Killing Game, everyone would be set free and have a happy ending. During the class trial, several facts about the Killing Game were revealed, including Tsurugi and Syobai’s plan. Mikado created a pop up for everyone that had two options: “Graduate” and “Repeat”. He lied that, by pressing ``Graduate everyone would be able to leave the Killing Game, but by pressing “Repeat” everyone would stay. Tsurugi told everyone that Mikado was lying and they should press “Repeat” instead, as he remembered Al Junko had a similar plan where, if everyone pressed “Graduate”, she would possess all deceased students’ bodies and escape into the virtual world.

Syobai and Iroha still pressed “Graduate” as they didn’t want to stay in the Killing Game, but Tsurugi, Rei and Yoruko pressed “Repeat” as they wanted to foil Mikado’s plan even if it meant staying in the virtual world. Mikado debunked Tsurugi’s claims by revealing that he did some modifications in the virtual world and, if the majority presses “Graduate”, everyone will be sent to a happy utopia within the virtual world. He was also able to manipulate Sora and Yuki into pressing “Graduate” and, with a 4/7 verdict, “Graduate” won the majority vote and everyone was sent into their “happy virtual utopia”.

As all of the requirements were complete, Mikado was able to resurrect Utsuro inside the virtual world, and immediately tried to kill him. However, Sora and the others were able to escape from their utopias and stop the murder. Sora revealed that Mikado’s real plan was to kill Utsuro in order to steal his Divine Luck. She also said he planned to use Akane Taira's lifeless body to escape in the real world, and that despite what Mikado believed, Akane Taira was the real holder of Divine Luck. Mikado was shocked, but quickly accepted it since, by possessing Akane Taira’s body he would obtain Divine Luck regardless. However, with the help of Sora’s luck, Syobai was able to use the administrator code and make it so Yuki Maeda would go into Akane Taira’s body instead of Mikado, completely ruining Mikado’s plan.

As the “body transference plan” was technically complete, the virtual world was collapsing and, since neither Mikado, Utsuro nor Sora had bodies in the real world, they were bound to disappear eventually. Mikado tried to kill Sora as revenge for ruining his plan, but Tsurugi used his gun to shoot down Mikado repeatedly, which didn’t kill but still left him injured enough to stay on the ground. Tsurugi also aimed his gun at Utsuro, but chose not to choose as it was pointless, Utsuro was not trying to harm anyone and he would disappear later anyways. Eventually the virtual world collapsed and Tsurugi, Rei, Iroha, Yuki, Syobai and Yoruko were able to escape into the real world, while the other three were erased.

Epilogue[]

After everything was over, Tsurugi ordered the arrest of Iroha and Syobai, as they were criminals who worked with Mikado at some point. After his flawed plan, the Kisaragi Foundation was a mess, with everyone, especially Rei, questioning Tsurugi’s actions. Yuki Maeda, who had Akane Taira’s body, escaped the facility for unknown reasons, though Midori theorized that he could have had problem with Tsurugi due to possessing a criminal’s body, but that’s unconfirmed. Iroha and Syobai were later able to escape from prison, and eventually from the island with Yuki’s help.

Trivia[]

  • Tsurugi Kinjo has a lot of similarities to Nagito Komaeda from the main Danganronpa series:
    • Both are anti-villains/anti-heroes who use extreme methods to achieve what they consider to be better.
    • Their true colors are revealed during chapter 1 and as a result they are hated by the rest of the participants.
    • The two attempted suicide at some point but ended up surviving (through in Nagito's case his suicide succeeded and he only survived because he was inside a simulation, while Tsurugi's suicide attempt failed due to Yuki Maeda's luck).
